Weighted Average

What is a weighted average?

A weighted average is the mean of a set of numbers with varying degrees of importance corresponding to each number.

The difference between the average and the weighted average is that when we calculate the average of a set of numbers, we simply add up all the numbers, and divide the total number to get the average.

With a weighted average, not all numbers are of equal importance. The numbers with a higher weight contributed more to the final result than those with a lower weight.

One usage of a weighted average is the way high school and college calculate the GPA of their students. A course with 4 credits has a higher weight than a course with only 2 credits when calculating the student's final grades.

Weighted Average Formula

The weighted average formula is given below for calculating a weighted average of a set of numbers.

Weighted Average = (x1 × w1) + (x2 × w2)+ (x3 × w3) + ... + (xn × wn) / w1 + w2 + W3 + ... + wn

How to calculate a weighted average?

Let's take a look at a weighted average example. We need a set of numbers and their corresponding weight to calculate the weighted average.

Weighted Average Example

We will use the weighted average to calculate a student's GPA based on the courses taken and the credits given to each class for the semester.

Class Credits Grade
Class 1 2 Credit A (4.0)
Class 2 3 Credit B (3.0)
Class 3 4 Credit B+ (3.3)
Class 4 2 Credit A- (3.7)
Class 5 4 Credit B (3)

To calculate the student's GPA or the weighted average, we plug in the numbers to the weighted average formula given above.

The student's grade is our data, and the credits for the class are the weight.

Weighted Average
= (2 x 4 + 3 x 3 +  4 x 3.3 + 2 x 3.7 + 4 x 3 ) / (2 + 3 + 4 + 2 + 4)
= (8 + 9 + 13.2 + 7.4 + 12 ) / 15
= 49.6 / 15
= 3.3
Therefore, 3.3 is the weighted average or the student's GPA for the semester.
